Remote control toys should preferably be packed in checked baggage, but if they’re in carry-on bags, passengers should expect additional screening, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Radio controlled toys have been used to detonate terrorist bombs in Iraq. “There is a well-known track record of using remote-control devices,” said Kip Hawley, head of the TSA.

The toys will not be banned; rather, TSA screeners have received extra training in how to detect remote-controlled toys that have been tampered with.

The TSA’s announcement of the extra scrutiny of the radio-controlled toys comes just days after the disclosure that a student at a Florida college was arrested in August on charge of making a video, posted on YouTube (and since removed), showing how to convert a radio-controlled toy into a bomb detonator.
