Airplane Certified by FAA Despite Concerns Print E-mail

At a recent Aviation Subcommittee hearing into the controversial certification of the Eclipse EA-500 Very Light Jet (VLJ), the chairman, Rep. Jerry Costello (D-IL), led off with this hypothetical, “For the past few years, I have asked the question – does the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have adequate resources to accomplish its mission?” It may be more pertinent to ask, for whom does the FAA believe it works? For pilots and the traveling public, or the airlines and the manufacturers?

Preheating Fuel May Prevent Ice Blockage Print E-mail

An obscure patent may be the solution to the crash at Heathrow last January. An interim report issued 4 September by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) hints that ice gummed up the British Airways B777 fuel system between the low pressure (LP) fuel pump and the fuel oil heat exchanger (FOHE).

Amid Proud Declarations, No Answer About Print E-mail

The airlines are complying with airworthiness directives (ADs) 98% of the time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In other words, all is well. But before accepting this declaration, consider a few factors, not the least of which is that the FAA conducted an audit of itself that lacks the test of independence.

 The Federal Aviation Administration issued a press release on 5 September 2008 titled “FAA Announces Results of Compliance Audits, Updates Safety Commitments.”  After reviewing what the FAA spin masters have released, this document should be titled, “Oh What A Tangled Web We Weave.”
